Fine Period Irish Georgian Mahgoany Bachelor's Chest, 18th Century
The rectangular top above a brushing slide with brass round pulls, short top drawers to both sides, faux front top drawer above three graduated long drawers raised on bracket feet. Original gilded brasses and key. Probably Irish.
Bachelor’s chests came into existence for practical reasons in the late 17th century. They were used “in a bachelor’s bedroom” for dressing, storage and writing. In this particular piece, it makes sense to have the short drawers to the side because when the brushing slide is pulled out, you cannot get into the top drawer.
