19th Century Painting of a Chinese Scholar
Large Chinese Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) Xianfeng Period (1851-1861) painting of an important government official and master scholar with flowing hair, mustache, beard and black headdress, wearing a colorful red loosely draped robe decorated with blue dragons and flowers, green lining, holding an ivory yiban. There is a shield in the bottom left hand corner enclosing a Chinese inscription by his disciples or students presenting him with his portrait.
Gouche on rice paper mounted on silk, gilded frame, black silk shantung mount, gilded narrow inner mount.
