Chinese Blue and White Canton Bowl
Chinese Canton export blue and white porcelain cut-corner salad bowl. Decoration on outside of bowl is of pagodas, mountain scenery, water, trees and figures. The inside bottom has a village scene with rockery and a boat with figure. The inside border has a butterfly in each corner with a lattice design and scrolled line effect.
Canton ware was imported in huge quantities and generally was used as ballast on ships. Much of it was completely different from the porcelain made for the home market. It was so inexpensive to produce that, early on, it was not considered an important porcelain. Because it was so common, there are no identifying marks on any of the pieces before 1890. All the designs were painted by hand so there is a great variation of patterns and colors of blue. It was made in complete dinner and tea services and also in different serving piece forms and multitudinous sizes. It has become highly collectible and quite expensive.
