Chinese Export Clobbered Jar, Circa 1780

Eighteenth century Chinese Export porcelain jar clobbered with an iron red background and decorated with exotic birds, butterflies, pagodas, river scenes, stylized flowers on an iron red background.

During the 18th & early 19th centuries, often blue and white Chinese export was sent to Holland and England to be “clobbered” or enameled with color to enhance their decorative appeal.  Colorful Imari porcelain was very popular at that time and was much more expensive than Chinese blue and white ware.   It took clever European potters to see the advantage of adding color or clobbering to the porcelain. It is an overglaze process which is refired to make the color permanent. The original blue and white designs remain under the repainted enamel.
