Chinese Porcelain "Clobbered" Jar, Circa 1780
Chinese porcelain baluster-shaped “clobbered” jar with the original blue and white decoration beneath the polychrome decoration. The two large shield shapes are decorated with pagodas, water scenes, bridges and flowers.
In the 18th century, there was a high demand for polychrome wares because Imari had become very popular. Blue and white Chinese porcelain was sent to the Netherlands and England to be over-painted. Once there, the porcelain was repainted and then refired and the colors became permanent. The original blue and white designs are still under the enamel.
