Chinese Qianlong Clobbered Vase, Circa 1700
Small Chinese blue and white baluster shaped clobbered vase decorated with an exotic bird, prunus blossoms, lotus flower and butterflies in green, iron red and yellow. During the 18th & early 19th centuries, often blue and white Chinese export was sent to Holland and England to be “clobbered” or enameled with color to enhance their decorative appeal. Colorful Imari porcelain was very popular at that time and was much more expensive than Chinese blue and white ware. It took clever European potters to see the advantage of adding color or clobbering to the porcelain. It is an overglaze process which is refired to make the color permanent.
