Georgian Japanned Side Serving Table, Circa 1790
Unusual late 18th century Georgian japanned side serving table, the top and high backboard follow the same serpentine shape and are joined by low side wings. The gilded Chinese asymmetrical open fret work is formed below the frieze and on the sides. The whole is raised on square tapered legs and joined by an under shelf. The gilded motifs are arranged on a solid black ground in which figures, gardens, tiny pavilions, boats, birds, rockery and trees happily coexist.
The art of japanning developed in the 17th century. The technique was described in manuals such as Stalker and Parker’s Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing, published in Oxford in 1688.
