English Antique Georgian Lancashire Commode or Bedside Table
Superb quality Georgian mahogany Lancashire bedside commode or pot cupboard with molded front rails, pierced sides for carrying and raised on reeded legs with brass casters. The two flat surfaces are hinged and lift to reveal the original ceramic liner with cover.
There would have been several of these in a home of the Georgian period. They would have been placed in an ante room, hallway or even adjacent to a dining room. Chippendale, as well as other cabinet makers, is recorded as supplying “night tables” or bedside commodes. It would not be used today as designed, but besides using it as a lamp table, perhaps use it open and use the liner as an ice bucket and place glasses around it with a bottle of champagne or gin. Or use it a hall piece for placing gloves, keys or cell phone. Quite a conversation starter!
