Mukha Linga Cover
Indian bronze Mukha-linga cover. The Mukha-linga signifies a face on a metallic, hollow casting used to cover a stone lingam, which is the phallic symbol of the god Shiva. The cover is thought to protect the viewer from harm. Cast in the shape of human head, the face is shown as a stern, unsmiling, mustached figure with bulging eyes, usually with a third eye in the middle of the forehead. The majority of mukha-lingas are from the Maharashtra/Karnataka region.
