Pair George II Rococo Mirrored Wall Sconces
Pair George II Rococo carved and gilded two armed English asymmetrical mirrored wall sconces. These sconces although ornate are light and graceful and decorated with carved C-scrolls and acanthus leaves. The candle cups are gilded bronze. The mirror plates have oxidized over the years.
The Rococo period (1700-1770) was an 18th Century artistic movement that originated in Paris against the rigid grandeur of the Baroque period. A key feature of the design is its curved asymmetric ornamentation, where its forms often resemble the letters ‘S’ and ‘C’, and where one half of the design does not match the other. Rococo flourished in English design between 1740 and 1770.
