Pair Chinese Ceramic Buddhistic Lions

Pair of large fierce-looking and colorful Chinese Ming style pottery Buddhistic lions or foo dogs in a Sancai glaze (three colors). They are finely modeled, the female with a cub under her foot symbolizing fertility and the male with an orb under his foot symbolizing the earth.

These guardian creations can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206BC – 211AD) where they were traditionally displayed in front of Chinese Imperial palaces and temples.
