Antique Sheraton Period Oval Center Table, 18th Century
Superb elegant Sheraton mahogany oval tilt-top breakfast or center table, cross-banded with satinwood on a collared turned pedestal and four beautifully proportioned molded splayed legs ending in brass casters. Norman Adams (1905-1979) was a pioneering and visionary antique furniture dealer who was renowned for selling the highest quality 18th Century furniture. His father, Walter Adams, was an antiques dealer in Bristol, England, But, surprisingly, he opened his first shop in Boston on Charles Street in 1923. It wasn’t until 1928 that he opened his shop in London on Hans Road in 1928. His selective eye searched for pieces with excellent patina, color, wood with outstanding grain, elegant proportions and unique forms. He had a deep respect for the artistry of English craftsmanship. He died in 1979 and his son-in-law, Stewart Whittington, took over the business along with Christopher Claxton Stevens.
