English Very Rare Pottery Bacchus & Ceres Jug, Circa 1810
Rare Bacchus and Ceres hand-painted polychromed pottery jug with a humorous coat of arms: A crescent moon, a six-pointed star, a punch bowl and lantern within a red shield, topped by an owl standing on a wine barrel. Ceres holds a sheaf of wheat in one hand and a scythe in the other; Bacchus, wearing a leopard skin, holds a bunch of grapes in one hand and a glass in the other. Along side the handle are two large initial “G”s. The Motto: In Nocte lae Tamur. “We rejoice in the night.” Originally designed as a tobacco paper for John Hainson, Bell Yard, Temple Bar.
