George III Period Yew Wood Slant Front Desk
George III period provincial yew wood and oyster veneered slant front desk. The rectangular slant front is bordered with oyster veneer and opens to reveal a writing surface and a fitted interior with a secret sliding well. The interior consists of a central prospect door, flanked on each side by columns that pull out to reveal secret document compartments, six pigeon holes above a double row of drawers with brass knobs. The bottom half consists of two false drawers, pull-out lopers to support the slant front and three graduated drawers, all bordered with oyster veneer, raised on shaped bracket feet. The brass pierced backplates with swan neck handles are original. The key is original. The secondary wood is oak. A very dramatic looking piece.
